Devotional – May 17: Your Filter
Read Proverbs 13
Key Verse: “He who guards his lips guards his life, but he who speaks rashly will come to ruin.” Proverbs 13:3
Have you ever said something that you would like to have back? In retrospect, you would have remained silent or used a different tone or a better sense of timing? The tongue is a dangerous weapon when it is out of control. Extroverts can get into trouble because thoughts quickly become words. It is wise to have a filter and with God’s help and practice, you can learn a new way to communicate.
Here are some questions that form a godly filter for your words:
- Is it true?
- Is it gossip?
- Is it an exaggeration?
- Does it help the other person?
- Is it spoken in love?
- What tone are you choosing?
- Is this the best time to say it?
At first, it may seem like work and unnatural to consider these elements. The results will be healthier and closer relationships, and glorifying God with your speech!
