Devotional – May 15: Giving Freely
Read Proverbs 11
Key Verse: “One man gives freely, yet gains even more; another withholds unduly, but comes to poverty.” Proverbs 11:24
Hector Montoya, a 9 year-old boy, was saving his money to buy play station 4 when he saw a sad story on the news. A mom and her son died from a house fire because they did not have a smoke detector. Hector decided to spend his money on smoke detectors for people in his neighborhood. The local fire department helped Hector install the new units and showed him how to use power tools too.
Over 100 smoke detectors have been installed! Two teenagers heard about this story and bought a play station 4 for Hector. Hector continues to save his money to help more families.
Because Hector was generous and chose the more important cause, he was rewarded for his kindness. If Hector would have only been thinking about himself, he would have missed out on an incredible opportunity. This simple story helps us evaluate our approach to money and relationships. God’s economy is different than the world’s system. A me-first attitude in life leads to poverty in many aspects of our existence, but a rich life includes going the extra mile for people.
